The bruises were internal

no gashes, scars or marks

he tried to break her spirit

with abusive snide remarks.

How could he be so hurtful

for one who seemed so kind

the day that they got married

love etched upon her mind.

Now to preserve her sanity

she needed to escape

into a life of freedom

her future to reshape.

She had the inner courage

To get up, walk away

Put this all behind her

Live to love another day.

Sometimes life gets in the way

Relationships begin to sway

Friends, family drift apart

Leaving you with a broken heart.

Maybe mountains seem so high

As more time passes by

Contact seems so difficult

A drifting chasm can result.

Does it need to be this way

Especially on Christmas Day

There is a present you can give

If we can’t forget please let us forgive.
