A poetic licence to experiment

Sometimes life gets in the way
Relationships begin to sway
Friends, family drift apart
Leaving you with a broken heart.
Maybe mountains seem so high
As more time passes by
Contact seems so difficult
A drifting chasm can result.
Does it need to be this way
Especially on Christmas Day
There is a present you can give
If we can’t forget please let us forgive.

( Golden haze of sunrise rays )
Droplets from the morning dew
Suspended delicately on spiderweb
Avoiding prickling gorse.
Bogland carpeted by bright yellow petals
A dandelion often much maligned
Gracefully nods as I approach
Dust drifted sparkled in the sunlight
I mellowed at the sight of a Lilly
Gently floating on reflected waters.
My mellow, yellow morning.

Lying by the roadside in a sleeping bag
dressed in rags, worn out shoes, in his hand a fag.
No one notices he exists
as they trip, pass him by
no one there to kiss caress listen to his cry.
Little did he know that day donning his pinstripe suit
to his penthouse office
he would end up destitute.
That thin red line we traverse
a tightrope in our mind
unaware how others feel
more reason to be kind.
In life we need our neighbours
without them we are lost
unless we learn that lesson
we will surely count that cost.

No it was me
I spied a dog out in the street
as I approached it did retreat
shaking, shivering, skeletal, shy
to see it so made me cry.
Maybe it strayed from home
roaming, nervous, all alone
or rejected sadly – left behind
life at times can be unkind.
I took it in – gave it space
now in my heart a special place
through all its pain there’s loyalty
was he lucky – no it was me.

Where schooling’s so important
Teachers in our schools today
Have a major role to play
In how our children learn to cope
With how the world has changed.
Instead there are a chosen few
Who hark back to the old bamboo
Seem to think it’s still allowed
To chastise they just shout out loud.
Thankfully those days are past
Of crime and punishment in the class
Where masters ruled with open hand
Flying dusters now are banned.
The need for knowledge has not changed
With teaching methods rearranged
Where futures can be mapped or lost
Let’s respect each other not count the cost.

A home I call my own
Lookout onto an island
hear Atlantic’s roar
remember all the emigrants
salt tears upon seashores.
Energies that were drained
from laid potato drills
cottages lying idle
stonewalled lonely hills.
A figure in a hooker
upon raging rolling waves
fighting now that savage beast
it’s heritage for to save.
Imprints of our ancestors
on every cornerstone
thankful for their sacrifice
from a home I call my own.

Your ashes swept away
Scattered where we first kissed
Tears flow freely into morning mist
Memories afloat on waters deep
Sleep, sleep softly sweetheart sleep.
Sadness now, you had to leave
To heal we need that time to grieve
Embrace that love we fondly shared
For this we are so ill prepared.
Now with you, at peace, at rest
I breathe a sigh. at your behest
I smile remember happy times.
The road to love is tough sometimes.

Sweet Afton
Sweet Afton
oh that carbon stick
your ashes we did flick
Behind school sheds
Passed secretly around smoke filled clouded heads.
Bought in single measures
from a corner store
Balanced now upon an ear
A treasure to adore.
Now a butt of ill repute
A pleasure now replaced
by a scented substitute
With chemicals sweetly laced
But is it just a step too far
To persecute All smokers
When the ball is in the other court
With politicians and stockbrokers.
